A Reminder …

  • Despite nearly constant news coverage since the war there began in 2003, 63 percent of Americans aged 18 to 24 failed to correctly locate the country (Iraq) on a map of the Middle East.
  • Seventy percent could not find Iran or Israel.
  • Nine in ten couldn’t find Afghanistan on a map of Asia.
  • And 54 percent were unaware that Sudan is a country in Africa.
  • Three-quarters of respondents failed to find that country on a map.
  • And three-quarters were unaware that a majority of Indonesia’s population is Muslim, making it the largest Muslim country in the world.

  1. this post reminded me of an anecdote from aub. in a poli.sci. class, some students were complaining that large numbers of americans were not familiar with the world. so the prof decided to ask the class how many countries bordered lebanon, and the majority thought there were three.

(i’m not really making a point with this comment; i was just reminded of that incident and decided to share :P)

  2. lol Manar, seriously? Maybe the Mediteranean sea is a country 😛

And yes it is a pretty good point. (am not sure I can locate Afghanistan in Asia) 😐

  3. ignorance is a great tool for manipulation. 😉

    ready-made, too. 😉

    and off with the rockets!

  4. Yes, I seem to recall having to head over to AUB’s engineering department if I wanted to discuss the 17 countries that surround Lebanon … 🙂
