Taunting Israel …

Lest one think that Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, Hizbullah’s Secretary-General, is the one taunting Israel into revving up the destructive power of its war machine, I offer Doctor Charles Krauthammer, a “columnist” for the Washington Post. While I would also like to add this opinion piece to others in my application for his medical license to be suspended on humanitarian grounds (see the Hippocratic Oath), the article reveals how much pressure Israel may be under from Washington to conduct its dirty business ahead of plans to attack Iran …

Here are the doctor’s warnings to Israel:

“Israel’s leaders do not seem to understand how ruinous a military failure in Lebanon would be to its relationship with America … “

“The United States has gone far out on a limb to allow Israel to win and for all this to happen. It has counted on Israel’s ability to do the job. It has been disappointed … “

“Olmert’s search for victory on the cheap has jeopardized not just the Lebanon operation but America’s confidence in Israel as well. That confidence — and the relationship it reinforces — is as important to Israel’s survival as its own army … “

I won’t address the many fallacies in the piece as the good doctor’s biases and lies are easy to spot, but this article serves as a great example of why hope for peace lies in Israel’s ability to avoid being led down the path to an apocalypse by its “friends” in Washington …

Furious is how I hope average Israelis would respond to such threats and condescension from Washington … The colonial/master-slave overtones are overwhelming and serve as a good lesson for those Lebanese who wish they too could be friends with Washington …

Worried is how I am about what this all means … The Bush team has demonstrated its ability to foul up a war of choice for which it had two years to prepare … But what disasters will attend a war on the fly … And how will they bring US opinion along for the ride …

Strange is how it is the utter disaster that is Iraq that may save us all …
