Everybody knew that the usual place you would go to to find a prostitute (not that I tried to!), was mostly around Jounieh, Maameltein.
Well, it seems that some are getting very cheap sex in Sabra, a Palestinian camp in Beirut. If you happen to know El Khaleh Om Ahmad (The aunt, Ahmad’s mother), then you probably are close to meeting some of her ‘girls’ that will take you to a room in the camp.
What caught my attention in this article is the horribly cheap rate: between 30,000 and 10,000LL. If say you pay 15,000 there are 10,000 going to “El Khaleh” and 5000 to the ‘girl’, which is virtually nothing!
The journalist gives information of one such girl called ‘Zeinab’ (I don’t know if it is a pseudonym but if it is one then that’s not an innocent one to say the least). “Zeinab” goes from Sabra to Corniche Khaldeh everyday. It is Zeinab who probably get 5000 from clients, although she expects to get tips. Imagine what a blowjob costs… 3000.
Clients are aged between 15 and 60. They are mostly Lebanese, Syrians, Iraqis and Sudanese. What? no Palestinians? That’s weird. They probably go to Maameltein…
The contrast in the relation with the body is what is strikingly shocking here. On one side we have a society that articulates an Islamic tradition through a particular ‘valorization’ of the body (especially the female) which preservation, protection, isolation, becomes the most precious and defended social practice, whereas on the other side, you have women using the body in the ways usually the most sanctified, to make subsistence living.
In both cases, there are similar power struggles taking place. Different forms of dominations, different uses of the body to craft the self.

Bechir I was a bit surprised that you put down Islamic practices as one of the tags for the post but after reading it I don’t understand why that would be the case? Last time I checked, prostitution (بغاء) is condemned by all mainstream Islamic interpretations that I know of, though I don’t know enough about the temporary marriages issue. Would you mind elobarating?
My last paragraph contrasts the two uses of the body. On one hand, prostitution and its particular practices shown in the article, and on the other, the re-articulations of traditions (the Islamic one for example) and its effects on the body. All I’m saying is that both these phenomena are occuring in the same geography. They are separate, but probably intersect socially. How and to what extent is a subject to elaborate.
The article mentions that prostitutes veil. I would not be the least surprised. This re-articulation of Islamic tradition, while a discursive manifestation is a social phenomena. Forget about ‘interpretations’, sources, and texts.

Bashir, what’s the point from writing this post? I guess you live in the Lebanon, which is noway an Islamic country. It’s the responsibility of governments to implement the laws (including the religious ones). So, we can’t rely on the sheep to behave well without a shepherd!
